LAW - 719B1 The False Claims Act in the Healthcare Industry (1 hr.)
The civil False Claims Act was initially developed during the Civil War in response to military contractors who attempted to profit by defrauding the government. After many years and significant amendments along the way, the False Claims Act has become the government’s most effective enforcement tool in its fight against fraud, waste, and abuse - especially in the health care and life sciences industries. This course will review the elements of the False Claims Act, government enforcement trends, noteworthy settlements and court decisions, defense strategies, and related compliance best practices with a particular emphasis on how government enforcement and regulatory agencies apply the False Claims Act to the health care and life sciences industries. The teaching strategies for this course will include readings, lecture, group discussions, and hypothetical exercises.
