The LLM in international legal studies offers specializations in international busness, free trade agreements and retional integration, international and comparative protection of intellectual property, international commercial arbitration, international environmental law, international organizations, gender and the law, and international human rights law. This program enables graduate students from U.S. and foreign law schools to engage in advanced research and to specialize in the above-mentioned areas through academic study and practical experience. The program has been specifically tailored to enable LLM students to take maximum advantage of the unique resources, such as international organizations, federal agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and research facilities that are available in Washington, D.C.
LLM Degree Requirements
International Legal Studies.The LLM degree requires the completion of 24 credit hours with a grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better, successful completion of two research papers that demonstrate a high degree of skill in legal scholarship and writing through the Research Track or completion of an externshipp through the Practical Skills Track, and recommendation for the degree by the faculty. In addition to concentrating in one area of specialization, LLM students may complete their degree requirements entirely by traditional classroom study or by classroom study combined with no more than 6 semester hours of approved externship or independent study credits.
