LAW - 676 Gender and the Law

(2-3 hrs.)

This course will provide students an introduction to how concepts of sex and gender interact with the law in the United States and internationally. Students will focus on how feminist movements and anti-feminist forces use law to challenge or reinforce gender norms. In each class, students will examine examples of legal mechanisms (such as civil litigation, criminal prosecution, legislation, and international instruments) that enable or constrain the ability of women to participate in the labor force; make choices about reproduction, health, and family life; protect themselves from violence; care for their families; access such resources as land and wealth; obtain political power; and agitate for change.
